Ah, summer! What a reward after months of bitter cold and gloomy skies. Whether you’re headed down to the Cape and Islands or up to Maine, it’s time to relax, have fun and escape. It’s easy for your fitness routine to get waylaid when you’re on the go. After all, who wants to hit the gym when you’re at the beach? The good news is you don’t need to compromise your vacation to reach your fitness goals! Check out these guidelines for a fun and fit getaway.

Forgive First

Rome wasn’t built in a day and you won’t gain any weight in just one day either! Remember that what you do most of the time determines your progress. A cupcake here and there is different than a pint of ice cream every night. Don’t beat yourself up if you overdo it, simply plan ahead next time and move on. If you find this happening frequently, consider mapping out your goals and letting the past go. You can’t change what already happened- it’s time to reflect, move on and succeed!

This or That

Substitutions can make or break you when it comes to eating out. Simple swaps at summer parties and BBQs can help you enjoy yourself and maintain a healthy weight too! Aim for healthy meals around each activity and load up on vegetables and lean protein. Indulge in dessert or drinks and savor the time you’re spending with the people that you love.

Glug, glug!

They’re called the Dog Days of Summer for a reason, so get ready for those sweaty, humid afternoons as you head up Newbury Street! More perspiration also means a higher likelihood of dehydration. By the time you are thirsty, you’re already dehydrated, so keep that water flowing all day long. Bored of plain old water? Flavor your drinks with sliced cucumber, berries or pineapple to give it a calorie-free boost. Limiting your alcohol consumption will also allow you to feel your best. Don’t be afraid to experiment with mocktails that taste great without the guilt!

Make it Green

No, we aren’t talking about the Green Monster! While summer outings are fun, they usually aren’t the best place to go for a kale salad. If you find your calendar stacked with events, offer to bring your own healthy side dish and load up on lean protein like chicken breast or tofu. Both are great on the grill and will provide you with the nutrients you need to build and maintain muscle. Another trick to increase your intake of greens is to try to add a small handful of spinach to your blended protein shakes. The green will be so subtle that you won’t even taste it!
